Periodontitis is another form of gum disease that can present in a variety of ways. The term periodontal means “around the tooth.” Therefore, periodontal disease affects the gums and bone supporting teeth.
Chronic periodontitis is one of the most common forms of the disease and is frequently seen in adults. The infection starts when the gums become inflamed due to bacteria in plaque, a sticky, colorless biofilm that forms on teeth. While this is often the main cause of periodontal disease, other factors can also be present which affect the health of the teeth and gums including:
- Smoking
- Diabetes
- Medications
- Habits (clenching and grinding teeth)
- Nutrition
- Stress
- Genetics
Gum disease can progress slowing or rapidly, depending on the individual, and treatment must be customized to meet your particular need.
